About Merrill Iron & Steel, Inc.

Merrill Iron & Steel, Inc. is a large-scale structural steel and heavy plate fabricator—your strong partner—with fully integrated engineering, detailing, project management, fabrication, delivery and erection services.

With over 500,000 square feet of combined fabrication and production space in the US, precision design and sophisticated fabrication equipment—all coordinated by our committed, highly skilled workforce—MIS has established itself as a leading, massive scale steel fabricator, meeting the needs of a diverse customer base.

In 1962, Roger W. Hinner purchased a 5,000 square foot foundry located in what was known as “Tannery Town” in Merrill, WI. Merrill Iron & Steel’s primary business was the fabrication of steel bulk storage bins for the local farming community.

With a company culture that was customer driven, MIS quickly grew to satisfy the commercial agricultural needs for complete design/build feed mill, seed processing and drying operations throughout the Midwest.

The 1980’s was dominated by market diversification that included the fabrication of structural steel and heavy plate for the general construction industry, along with expansion into industrial construction for the pulp and paper industry.

In 1995, responding to demand for larger-scale structural steel projects, a 365,000 square foot manufacturing facility was purchased in Schofield, WI, providing ample production space, accessibility to a larger, qualified workforce, plus convenient transportation access to the major arterial intersection of Interstate-39 and Hwy 29.

Before long, the 160,000 square foot Acme structural steel facility in Springfield, MO was acquired. A central location, along with an experienced workforce, continued to fuel expansion into new markets, particularly projects requiring plate work.

Today, under the continued direction of Roger E. Hinner, and with experienced, trained team members at all levels of the organization, Merrill Iron & Steel primarily serves a large-scale, diverse customer base, assists with LEED certification goals where needed, and maintains a particular pulse on the emerging needs of the Power & Energy industry.

The part of our history that repeats itself, as they say, is that Merrill Iron & Steel remains true to our original company culture…we are customer driven.
